Analytical Chemistry: Emerging Trends

Analytical chemistry is a branch of chemistry which is concerned with the separation, quantification and identification of matter. Every naturally occurring or artificially produced substance contains a combination of different elements. It is possible to identify and quantify the different types of impure species in a substance with the help of analytic tests. These tests also help in determining the properties of pure materials. Such methods have been improved with the aid of computer technology and sophisticated analytic instruments. Gas chromatography is one such technique which separates the different components of a gaseous mixture. The mass spectrometer is an analytic instrument that separates substances in order of the mass of the constituent ions. Some techniques offering greater sensitivity are polarography, atomic absorption and neutron activation.
